4 blankets down, 8 more to my yearly goal. This latest blanket was actually a kit that was given to me a few years ago. If you take a look at the cover of the kit you can easily see that the final blanket is far from the kit design. The kit supplied 4 balls of yarn but I wasn’t sure it if would be sufficient for the called afghan. I crochet loosely and the worse thing would be to run out of yarn part through the blanket. Besides, single crochet is not my thing...LOL So erring on the side of caution I made a series of squares and joined them as I went. With the remaining yarn it was simply double crocheting round and round. |

Enough with this heat and humidity already. With the humidex it's already into the 30s and it's barely 9 am. Tomorrow is supposed to be BRUTAL, I can hardly wait.
I've finished most of the squares using the yarns featured in my previous post. All I have left to do are the 5 alternative squares. Again, until we return to normal seasonal temperatures I won't even attempt to assemble the blanket. Last night it was too hot to think about another project I could start so I settled for making a few more of the of the circle-in-the-square centres required for one of the scrap blankets. My next project will more than likely be squares for another scrap blanket. Just recently I discovered another bin of odds balls of yarn that I had completed forgotten about. I swear this stash is multiplying like bunnies...LOL Good news, I’ve finished the required number of 5 row granny squares to form a blanket. Bad news, it is still a bit warm to join them together into a blanket at this point so I’ve put the completion of the blanket on hold for a bit. In the meantime I continue to make more squares. The picture below shows you the yarn that I am currently working with. Stayed tune to see what the final product looks like.
What do you do when you don’t have air conditioning? It’s time to concentrate on small projects. As usual I have a number of WIPs but anything that is made in one piece has been put on the backburner for much cooler days. Lately the temperature has been averaging from 32 to 40 Celsius which is in the 90s to 100s when you factor in the humidity. It is definitely not the time of year you want a large heavy piece growing in your lap. This is the perfect time to use up those odds and ends from other projects. You know that half or quarter skein which is not enough to do anything constructive with. Not enough to use in my supply of 5 row granny squares or towards my hexagon blanket (see the January post). So I’m making the leftover yardage go as far as possible. With the larger lots I’m making the circles for the “Circle-in-a-square” blanket, and what is left over is being turned into yo yo’s or granny daughters.
You can find the pattern for the Circle-in-a-square at Crochet World. Yo yo's are double crochet stitches worked into a ring. Granny daughters are the first row of a basic granny square. Instructions for yo yo's and granny daughter can be found on the Crochet Cabana site. |
