I found another crochet along which features squares that are probably more suited to someone with intermediate crochet skills or someone up for a challenge. Interweave Crochet has started a Chain Reaction Afghan Crochet-Along! If this never ending heat wave continues for much longer it looks like my crochet projects will put on hold or at least take a whole lot longer to complete. Yesterday, July 21st was the hottest on record, 37.9 C (or 100.22 F) and with the humidex 50 C (or 122 F). Without A/C at home it was dicey. Anyhow today it’s much better with the predicted high of 33 (91.4 F) and a humidex of 40 C (104). Heh it’s all relative. So for anyone keeping count of how I’m doing with my personal blanket and slipper challenge even though I working on a couple of blankets right now it will be a while before they are completed because it looks we face at least another week of this crazy heat. Handling anything more than one square at a time is just too hot.
If you want to try a blanket that has a variety of squares in the same project why not try the 2011 Bernat Mystery Crochet-Along Afghan (CAL). I personally just discovered the link and think this is a project that I might tackle in the near future. In the past I’ve done a couple of afghans that are made up of different size squares and it sure takes the boredom out of doing the same square over and over. The only challenge is at the end when you are assembling and joining the squares together. Once you have the hang of it it’s a breeze.
Each week a clue or square pattern was released on the Bernat blog. You will need to follow the blog from September through December 2010. Here’s the URL for the beginning of the CAL. Bernat Mystery Afghan Crochet-Along 2011. It's been very hot and humid the past few days so it's definitely the time to concentrate on making squares. Looking for square patterns? Here are a few sites that you might be interested in. Also check out patterns for washcloths, dishcloths and potholders because they too can turn into lovely squares for blankets
Hooked on Handmade Crochet Poet's Pattern Collection p2 Designs Crochet & Craft Links For the more advanced crafter Happy Yellow House With less than a pounder of the neon pink yarn left I knew I didn’t have sufficient yardage to take on a large piece so settled for a series of 3-row squares. The end product was the several 9 inch quilt pieces finished off with a scalloped edge.
