Not sure how to make a granny square? You are not alone. A common misconception is that the first project for someone new to crochet is how to make a granny square. Personally I had been crocheting for many years before I learned how. Depending on what website or book you read there might be a few variations but the principle is the same. For example, in the following video they chain 3 to start, I tend to chain 4. It's all about preference. If you are unfamiliar with granny squares why not give it a try? What am I currently working on? A blanket using up yarn I picked up at a stash sale, yep a stash sale. Each year members of the Toronto Hookups crochet guild can bring in yarn, books, accessories that they are trying to pass on to a new home and this yarn caught my eye. It’s the red and green holiday yarn from Red Heart. I couldn’t found a pattern I wanted to use so I’ve gone with simple granny squares trimmed in white. Right now I’m at the crossroads of deciding whether to make two kids size blankets or continue and go for a regular twin size one. Decisions, decisions.
For 2011 I’ve set a couple of personal charity goals... to make 10 blankets and whip up 20 pairs of slippers. Let me clarify, the blankets that will be included in these stats are blankets that I am totally responsible for creating for charity, they will not include any blankets where I have contributed to their construction through assembling donated squares, those blankets will continue to be counted as part of the overall monthly counts.
I’ve gone back through my stats for the past few years and I think this is a reasonable challenge. Why now? Simply I’ve run out of room ... LOL Like any true yarn enthusiast it’s all about creating that wonderful stash, well it’s time to diminish those skeins of yarn and take back my space. With the closing of the local Coats & Clark outlet store last year and local clearance warehouse sale where Red Heart pounders were sold for $1.59 who could resist? I’m also the type of hobbyist who waits for the yarn to speak to them, what should I make out of this yarn? With this colour combination? I would wait until I got that “ah ha” moment when I would fit the ideal pattern with the yarn before starting. Well moving forward if I want to create a dent in the ole’ stash I won’t have the luxury of those “ah ha” moments and it will be more a state of “just do” even if it means falling back on the old standby granny square blanket. What that saying about good intentions? Well I had planned to start blogging early in the new year but as usual life got in the way so here we are already into February. C'est la vie.
If you're a return visitor to the GTA Warming Families site then thank you, or if you are brand new, then a hearty welcome. In the past the blogs on this site have been related to winter items challenges but this year I've decided to switch things up. This year you will be able to monitor my commitment to charity endeavours as well as read posts or view videos on items that I feel might be of interest to you. I'll forewarn you that things will come in spurts. At times there will be several posts and then nothing for a bit but I will try and be consistent in posting at least a few things each month. So sit back and enjoy. |
